BIOICT PROJECT

BIOICT is a joint laboratory funded in 2017 by two different institutes of the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR). These institutes are the Istituto di Biofisica (IBF) and the Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell’Informazione (ISTI).

IBF performs fundamental and applied research into biology and biotechnology using the quantitative approach and instrumentation typical of physics. The studies, which seek to achieve a mechanistic understanding of natural phenomena, are mostly carried out at the cellular and molecular levels but may also concern biological systems as a whole. Interdisciplinary by nature, IBF employs scientists from diverse backgrounds (physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics).

ISTI develops excellent scientific research in the field of computer science and plays an active role in technology transfer. The field of expertise covers information science, related technologies and a wide range of applications. ISTI activity is aimed at increasing knowledge, developing and testing new technologies and demonstrating their effectiveness in various fields of application. The Institute carries out research, technology transfer and training activities in the main thematic areas of Information Technologies: Systems and Networks, Software Technologies, Information and Knowledge Management Systems, Graphics and Images Processing, Computational Applications.

Starting from the scientific activities of IBF and ISTI, the joint BIOICT laboratory aims to develop frontier research by applying typical ICT achievements to biological systems. The research activity is aimed to intelligent imaging systems:

Application of Machine Learning (Deep Learning) methods to the recognition of cancer cells and tissues.
Smart processing methods applied to imaging obtained by Scanning Probe Microscopy or Raman spectroscopy and Imaging.

Example of application of Deep Learning to recognition of osteosarcoma cells.
