Nonlinear dynamics and mathematical models in biology

Research Line: MD.P01.004.001 – Models of organization and dynamics of complex systems
People: Angelo Di Garbo, Santi Chillemi, Marco Carloni

One of the most significant discoveries in mathematics and modern physics is that non-linear systems, with few degrees of freedom, can develop complex behaviors (deterministic chaos). The theory of dynamic systems has been developed to describe these systems. Nonlinear dynamics uses the principles and methods of this theory to qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the properties of these systems. Biology offers us many examples of non-linear and complex systems, and in this context, the non-linear dynamics methods are the main tools to investigate their behaviors theoretically. In this research context  the main research  lines of the group are the following:

– study of nonlinear dynamical systems (deterministic and stochastic);

– mathematical models of biological systems (neural dynamics, dynamics of calcium and cellular populations)
